Flying Tarot or Tarot Flying

roppo

For the Japanese children (and some grownups) the New Year Day is the day for playing and making fun with traditional toys such as wooden tops, karutas, and kites. And Japanese traditional kites are shaped rectangular with twin tails, very suitable for drawing. So I decided to apply Tarot images to these.

The size of the kites are 264mm*385mm ; the pictures are printed by Epson A3 printer.

And of course let's go fly the kite.

It's really funny and great to see the Fool flying high up in the sky.
You should try it, friends.

Ah Roppo you are a person after my own heart! What a great idea! I love flying kites. We have an annual kite flying day here- inspired by the Japanese community and joined by the Chinese with wonderful kites of all sorts. I made a box kite last summer- I will make one with Tarot images on it the next time(if we ever get one) Your model looks great and easy to make. I think the Hanged Man would look pretty classic flying upside down in the sky. Someone is bound to ask what the images mean lol. ~Rosanne

Awww! What a great idea!
We used to have a contest on flying handmade kites at my school. Back then I didn't know anything about tarot.. DARN IT!... It would have made one cool looking kite with the Star or the World card!!! :D

I have not gone back to Japan in 13 years.. your photos of Japanese toys sure bring back a lot of memories for me :) Thank you so much for sharing these, roppo.

What a fabulous idea! I love to fly kites too, and used to do it regularly at one time in my life, though I never mastered the art of making my own kites. To see those two tarot images whirling in the sky must be impressive. Hehe, I can't help wondering what M. Vieville would think of one of his cards flying in the sky above Japan! He would be incredulous and excited, I imagine...

Thanks for sharing, Roppo.

Hah! And what happens when the kite takes a sudden dive (aka: a Falling Fool!)?

If only it weren't so rainy around here at the moment, I would go out and build one of these myself. A Flying Fool would be priceless to see! :D
