greta's harmonic tarot

greta

Hello! I've wanted to design and make my own Tarot deck since the first time I laid my eyes on a deck (I think it was the Chow Cards, from the Cardcaptor Sakura cartoon). I'm still a student in high school and I don't exactly have a plan to publish my deck, but I hope to figure that out in the future... @_@. There are a lot of things I need to do to improve my art, but I feel this project will be a long-term one anyway (I'm thinking years...). I hope to learn more about Tarot through this process -- as I'm absurdly new to this system of cartography -- and improve my drawings along the way. It would be my dream to design a variety of decks in the future!

I have a few ideas in mind for my deck, but they need polishing. This is something quite personal to me. For starters, this will be a Harmonic Deck -- one about balance and different things, opposites even, co-existing together. I want this to incorporate magical and mythological beings (brownies and fairies) living with humans and have fashions from different eras, with different cultures being represented. I want different elements interacting with each other. I want it to have a modern and "old" feeling to it. I want this to be a very open deck -- something just for everyone in it. It will probably have a cheery disposition as opposed to dark -- I feel there are too many of those in circulation already!

I drew some sketches in my Tarot journal while I was reading a book. Everything is done without reference, because I am drawing what comes to my head. I think I will digitally paint them when I'm satisfied with the sketch. I scanned and uploaded them to tinypic for your viewing!

This is the major arcana, Death. It's a Shrine Maiden. I wanted her to appear both strong (explains the hair, at least) but delicate. I will add spirits around her and encase her in darkness!

Another card is of The Moon. I.. wanted to add a bunch of "horror" creatures, including a werewolf, a vampire, and The Creature (Frankenstein!). I also wanted it to make it kind of cartoonish, not quite as scary as they may seem. These are all monsters that came to my head when I thought... what grows stronger at the presence of the moon, at night? I added outlines of crosses around the sketch. I want to fit as many monsters as I can in this card so it will be ever-expanding...

The next two girls, I want them to personify two sets of elements interacting. One girl represents air, and she is floating above water. I want to add water nymphs interacting with her, but I need to revisit the background. @_@ The other girl represents fire, and she is grounded on earth. Her presence alone creates a tremendous impact on the terrain -- a natural disaster.

These are just my small ideas for a project of a grander scale. I would extremely appreciate any and all feedback that allows me to improve. :) I hope this to be a learning experience that allows me to delve deeper in the realm of Tarot!

You have a good eye and good hand for expressions and posture!

Those are kind words. Thank you! ^^

I worked on Death a little bit more. She is a miko, a shrine maiden. To fit in with the fantasy aspect, I have her as a person who collects spirits and lays them to rest. There is something in front of her, but we do not quite know what it is. She approaches it calmly though, ready for any challenge. There is fog all around her. I blocked in the colors and decided where everything should go. The next step is simply to render and clean things up, refining blurry things, etc. :)

Ooh, I like your style. :)

Gracious! Those are just beautiful.

For your OWN protection, I suggest you watermark these images at once. That helps prevent anyone taking YOUR beautiful work.

Beautiful and unusual. I agree with GMB about the watermarking though.

It seems to be a balance between showing your work here and getting some encouragement and feedback, and keeping internet thieves at bay.

Yes - lovely cards and deserve protection. Watermarking is easy enough to do.

Thanks for the support! I will watermark the final, but I would like to keep the works in progresses free of any marks. I don't think anyone would claim my sketches as their own, would they? I'm still rather undecided on distribution when I'm finished...this is a rather personal project for me so I'm not sure if people would be interested in purchasing it. And even then, I haven't a clue on who to contact to publish decks or how to self-publish... I'm rather clueless as you can probably tell. ^^"

I drew a couple of more sketches on my journal and will have them scanned by the next update. Meanwhile, I've put a bit more work on Death. Everything still needs to be rendered out and sharpened, but I'm taking my time while also thinking of ways to incorporate more things that symbolize endings.

Greta I must say very beautiful! Lovely work....love the feel of the softness in you work and the colors are so clean too. It so much has an Asian type style to it. Cannot wait to see more..you have talent!
