The 9 of cups is also about being smug. He's collected all 9 cups and he's sitting around feeling pretty good. But is he really happy with all those identical cups. Has the celebration become dull? Have all the parties (3 of cups) lost their newness? So maybe the fear is a sort of boredom?

Hmmm, never thought of it that way but I guess that is always a possibility, too.
