For the residue from sticky tape, labels or similar, I usually use tea tree oil or another essential oil. I googled briefly and saw that cooking oil will do, so I suppose it's the oiliness.
I have a blue agate thumbstone that's been in a drawer for a few years, brand new still on its card, one of those "touristy" little presentation cards. I found it among my mother's things after she died and have never wanted to take it out until this evening, when I was really drawn to it so I removed the card and discovered it's been held all this time by a thin strip of sellotape across the front, and double-sided tape on the back.
I know you can't wash certain stones in water and I don't know how robust agate will be with oil or anything else. The goo from the double-sided is really gooey and I can't make any difference at all scratching with a thumbnail, and on the front there's a little "tidemark" from the tape that only shows with the light at certain angles. Am I safe to use cooking oil? Sounds trivial and silly but I'm really not into crystals and don't know anything of their chemistry. I just looked up blue agate and it relates to lots that are important for me at the moment, and I'd like to carry it for a bit.
