You can see the same back design in the following old tarots:
1. Miike-Conver ( around 1800? According to Mr Thierry Depaulis, this is the earliest Conver specimen as far as he knows.)
2. "Tarot Allemand à deux têtes" (Reproduction deck by France Cartes)
The original is the double-headed deck by Lefer (Paris, early 19th century).
So, this design is not an invention of Camoin and Jodorowsky.
coredil said:Hello Kenji,
I have two early copy of the Tarot Allemand or Tarot Chinois.
Both copy are printed by Grimaud (so not Lefer and not Lequart et Mignot).
But both have a 1890 tax stamp and ... they have both a different cardback!
I wonder how does the cardback of your copy look like.
Hi Kenji,kenji said:Hi coredil
I have a Grimaud "Tarot Chinois", too.
It has a 1890 tax stamp, and the same back design as yours -- the right one.
And interestingly, one of my early Grimaud TdM (Yellow dice & Tulip, with tax stamp) has also this checker pattern.
Could you put the image of Lefer deck I sent you here, for everyone's reference?
Kenji
