I think the best tip I saw on there is to use a piece of silk to rub away the dirt. Someone else suggested a rubber cement eraser, and I know for a fact that the Statue of David was restored by using a white soft rubber eraser...(granted, he is made of marble, though!) still, I see that chamois cloth, silk, cotton tip buds and an eraser had begun to be used by one restorer, anyways.

and for sure, silk or chamois or soft white rubber eraser will not damage your cards (and...neither will white bread!)

ETA I found also some lovely tips on a book restoration site. Soft cloth seems the way to go!
