Learning the cards w/ dyslexia

youareafool

Can you suggest any decks that may be easier to learn with dyslexia? Preferably color coordinated with drastically different suit styles. I'm having a hard time telling them apart 😫

Padma

Gosh, that is a hard one. I have this problem, too. I find that decks with strong colours help, as well as decks that have fairly unique art - because same-y art makes the deck a bit of a blur, I find.

You could also try decks that have a more geometric take on things...? geometric symbols can help make things stick.

If I remember correctly, Ciro Marchetti's decks - the Gilded series - have a geometric and brightly coloured symbol on each card. His art is very striking, his cards are quite distinct - you may have an easier time with those?

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/gilded/ ah yes, there is a distinctly different coloured oval on top of the suits. Pentacles have a green one, Swords have a blue one, Cups have yellow, and wands have red. (goes with their associated elements).

You might also try the Illuminati, as Eric Dunne's collage work uses drastically different images in each card - and loads of bright colours!

The Mary El deck has also got hugely different cards from each other...very striking.. Hard to get them mixed up with each other. Also very brightly coloured!

I hope some of this helps :)

Thank you very much. You certainly are helpful! I'm going to keep track of what works best for me so I can later post a guide for other learners who happen to be dyslexic as well 😜

Padma

I do hope you try by getting at least one of the decks! They are all great ;) it just depends upon what your personal art preferences are.

some other decks that are striking and wildly varying in their cards are the Holy Light tarot

LeGrande Circus

and tarot of the Magical Forest.

I am sure others here will also have a good idea of decks that are distinct from card to card, and visually memorable! Good luck!

ps you might want to stroll through the database of cards that have been compiled - same place I have been getting these links for you :)

You can search alphabetically, by style, title, etc. easy! :)

Thanks again! I was also wondering about about card memorization tricks as well... If I try to just go through the deck and look them up one by one they just seem to bleed together if that makes sense. But yes, the deck itself will help for sure

Padma

Maybe begin by using just three keywords per card, as a memory trick...? You might even write them on each card...You can expand to include far more meanings as your experience grows.

There is a member here named Seven Stars who creates many decks for sale. She has a deck called the Deck of the Bastard (as it is a few decks that have been incorporated together) and you can order it with personalized backs, as well as keywords written on the sides, top and bottoms of the cards. This may also be of invaluable help...?

http://www.tarotbyseven.com/#!product/prd3/1329330931/deck-of-the-bastard-tarot-deck simply check "with titles AND keywords" in your border choice :)

You can also try to just read the cards intuitively - what do the pictures mean to you? Are their details in the pictures that trigger insights? This can work too, if studying them in a rote fashion, by the book, is too discouraging. Many people here at the forum read in this fashion :)

I have been wondering about that last part, but I was hesitant to ask. I know there isn't set "rules" to tarot, and everything is open to interpretation. But is it bad form to simply give a reading based on how the cards make me feel, even if I don't yet know their meanings by heart? I'm aware of the differences in suits and most of the major arcana. I have given a few quick readings and they seem to be much more effective when I just go on intuition as opposed to stopping to look things up. I plan on incorporating better archetypes as I learn the cards better, but I also don't want to disrespect my cards by being a Fool (0) lol

No, not bad form at all. You might like to join us in the monthly ISG circle. This month's is open for signup. Have a look at what we do :)

You don't quite qualify as you need 25 posts - but you have till 8th to make them :D And there's always next month.

There are a LOT of decks with colour coded suits, by the way - that might help. I'll try and remember a few...

ETA OK here are some - not all easy to find, I fear):

Tree of Life – Camphausen
Unicorn (from U S Games)
Self-Guided (Cameo)
Kabbalistic Tarot G.O.M.
Labyrinth (Royo)
True Love (Zerner/Farber)
Alchimistes (Beauchard)
Angel (Müller)
Magic Manga
The Game of You
The Tarot Game (Alexander)
Raven's Journey (on Gamecrafter)
Archangel Power – I REALLY wouldn’t recommend this…)

There are others, but my database isn't big on this info :D

Nope! Not bad form at all! We even have a reading circle exercise here, the ISG, that we do monthly. (in fact, you can sign up for October if you like! It is in the "reading circles" subforum, which is buried inside the "reading exchange" forum, link on top left corner on the menu bar). In this reading exchange exercise, we are not even allowed to use the traditional meanings of the cards, but must draw heavily upon our impressions of colour, sight, image, even sounds we think we hear, or tastes we think we can taste while looking at the card! :D

I believe there is only one rule to reading on a purely intuitive basis - you must tell your sitter you do intuitive readings. That way, they know what is going on :)

You might also want to try oracle cards, which work incredibly well as a platform for intuitive readings. However, I myself use many intuitive techniques with tarot, relying heavily not only on my intuition, but on how the images make me feel, or what their details reveal to me about the question and the answers.

If that is your preferred method, by all means, roll with it! :)

ETA Haha! I posted at the same time Gregory did! ;) and - NO-ONE here knows decks like Gregory does! She has an encyclopedia of them in her head! ;)
