Eden Gray was the first person to use the term, Fool's Journey, in The Complete Book of the Tarot. Waite talked about "the soul's progress." Etteilla, in his Book of Thoth spoke of the the tarot as "this game of the ancient peoples indicating to us THE ROYAL ROAD OF THE HUMAN LIFE, which we must follow." He was following up on Antoine Court de Gébelin's reference to Tarot translating from Egyptian as "royal road."
