How do you get a feel for the person?

I do the same thing that Lain does. If I don't know them I usually ask for their age, and maybe a small amount of background information from them. Say I am doing a love reading, it would help to figure out if they are actually in a relationship at the moment or not.

To be honest I've never read for a complete stranger in person, so I don't know how well we would connect. Maybe it would be a whole lot better than on the internet, maybe not.
