Poll - best deck to take to a party?

Umbrae

The Master anticipates the needs of the master, so as to serve the master well.

when we awake in the morning, we anticipate how we shall be asked to share the messages that we share.

Our master is all of the sitters we shall serve.

Hi all,
I'm taking a tarot deck to a party with me. I may or may not end up using it but I'm torn between my Hanson-Roberts and Universal Waite. The reason I'm chosing these ones is because they look "traditional" and are not too scary or harsh looking (I love my Deviant Moon for reading but I think some of the creatures may disturb some of the more uninitiated)

Help me choose!
That is the voice of a master speaking, “I think some of the creatures may disturb some of the more uninitiated” I suppose this may depend on the type of party you are going to. Hanson-Roberts? You may as well take the Tarot of Bunnies Hugging Duckies. In the end I'd have to ask, "How do you know it may disturb..." and "how do you know which masters are 'initiated'?"

Perhaps something more neutral so as to anticipate master’s needs best?

Franky i just do not like the idea of the Tarot being presented at parties.

If you have to do so then the Hanson-Roberts lends itself well to smaller hands as does the smaller version of Colman, Rider-Waite. This may be the better choice being an 'original' which may be enough to stir further active interest.

In my opinion there is nothing "sweet" about the HR Devil or 5 of swords !

I personally use the Gilded tarot for any public situation. It's gorgeous, based on RWS, and people really respond well to it.

too late, but...

I always take three decks. One traditional (RWS, Hanson-Roberts, Sharman-Caselli), One playful (Ferret, Gummi Bear, Halloween) and whatever my primary deck has been lately.

It's never too late! Although my party has been and gone, others might ask the same question in the future so your reply is still very valid and quite insightful. I took 2 similar decks (Hanson-Roberts and Universal Waite) and my primary deck (Deviant Moon). The reason why I chose the Hanson-Roberts is because it does have a softer look to it than the Universal Waite deck but maybe I should have chosen something else different again. In the end though, the Hanson-Roberts one was the one I used.

I suppose we can change the question a little by saying "what decks would you take" rather than "what deck(s) should I have taken the party"?

So what decks would you have chosen? :)

You are right Umbrae - and you have made me laugh with your analogy for the Hanson-Roberts ( :) ) It is considered too cute and too sweet by some, but I think that makes it quite engaging in some circumstances.

You are right, Aladdin. I prefer not to broadcast Tarot readings at other peoples parties but since I am known for it, I tend to take one deck with me (more as a just in case than a must do thing) In fact, sometimes I am asked if I'd do a reading there and then but I really take in the mood of the atmosphere before saying yes or no. Sometimes, it's just not appropriate to bring the cards out.

I always take a selection of three decks with me, and usually find myself surprised at which decks people choose.

OK, I know I'm new, but....

I figure it depends on the party and who will be there, the music playing, the atmosphere. When I lived in L.A. and got invited to some interesting parties with a more liberal-minded and eclectic crowd than many places, I'm sure I would feel more leeway with decks.

I've taken my erotic decks with me a few times, had some really great conversations about the differences between sensual/sexual/erotic/pornographic (and boring).
