I would suppose that like most things in life eveyone has their own way of doing it that works for them, so I will give you my way of doing it and you can see how it works for you.
I always begin by cleansing the space in which I will be working - i.e. sage smudge.
I will meditate for a short while until I feel calm and collected
Using my own fair hands (I just prefer it to a wand) I start in the NE corner and draw a circle of light in a circle putting all my intention from my heart down my arm through my fingers, that the area will remain pure from 'unwanted attention' and will harness the energy being built until I'm, ready to release it.
Draw the circle from NE round ending up back at NE and overlap slightly to ensure its closed fully.
I also ask for asistance from a guide or guardian to work with me.
From then on request assistance from the Elements within the circle etc...
I know some will do it differently but I do what works for me.
