Tarot Decks that "feel" more like oracles

greatdane

After viewing the Wild Unknown, which I think is really lovely and unique, I started thinking of decks that say tarot but "feel" more oracle. This is one of those decks for me. I also feel the Wildwood, that I just got, has more of an oracle, or at least a hybrid feel, than strictly tarot. Perhaps this is becoming more of a trend, changing tarot, personalizing it more? I'm not sure. I am not saying this is a negative or a positive thing, just I seem to be seeing it more and more as people, designers, perhaps try to push the envelope or even design a new one. ATers? Your thoughts?

First ones that come to my mind:

Tarot of the Transformation
and
Fairytale Tarot (BabaStudio)

And I like it. It feels like and extra-layer. I can use it or I can resume to "traditional" tarot.

Carla

Gaian Tarot

Book of Shadows Tarot

Lisa Hunt Fairytale Tarot

Morgan Tarot (which isn't actually a tarot)

Sacred Sites Tarot (I don't even know if I can use this like an oracle, let alone a tarot--why did I buy it? or rather, why am I so vulnerable to new deck buzz?)

I agree with you about Wildwood, and would also add

Greenwood (I've seen it in person and in my opinion it is fabulous, but I will never bother to buy one because the prices are beyond all reason)

Daphne and Carla

Daphne, I also kind of see some decks as being not an alternative to tarot, but as something complementary. Like I could do a reading with I consider a regular tarot deck and then do a reading with say the Wildwood, but that reading would feel more like an oracle reading to me. Again, not a bad thing, just different.
Carla, I understand, I really do. There are some decks that look so interesting. Then one gets it and it's like you have to learn a new system. Seriously, I can't just read Wildwood. This is one time I WILL use a book that comes with a set. Normally, I toss the book, but this deck isn't like tarot to me, some similarities, but not enough I don't feel I could benefit from reading the book. For example, ten of arrows. So not like I see the ten of swords. I do like the animals in the deck, but again, I don't normally associate them with court cards. It is an interesting deck to me so far, but one I will really have to put some time in with. This isn't one I will read out of the box, some cards, yes, most no. The same I think would be true of the Wild Unknown, really interesting, but not tarot to me.

Cerulean

Celestial as both

I read the deck as both, giving me both tarot and astrology wisdom.

Gee, Cerulean, I wish I had your gift! I tend to see not as an either/or, but as tarot, oracle or a hybrid, which is really oracle to me, with a tarot influence or vice versa. I can't kind of separate, at least the Wildwood, as ok, now tarot, now oracle. I need you to do a Vulcan mindmeld and show me how to do that! LOL

Le Fanu

LoS Tarot of Fire. Maybe Tarot of The Origins. Basically, any tarot deck which I fail to understand must be an Oracle...

There are others. I need to have a think...

(I wonder if others have the same criteria?)

HighPriestess

I'd say the Book of Shadows, Vol. 1 and any of Lisa Hunt's decks, but especially the Animals Divine feel more like oracles to me, the Mythical Goddess too, although it has less of an "oracle deck" feel and more like "a reeeeeally non-traditional tarot feel", it's kind of a hybrid feeling.

Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't see EVERYTHING that calls itself tarot, as well, tarot. It seems like it's become more common to change the names of suits, common interpretations, and make more intuitive and less following a system (which I generally see as oracle).

Penthasilia

I would add Silicon Dawn to the list- with all the extra cards and so forth.

DreamPower tarot.

Any deck that has so many "extras" that you need to have the book to interpret the reading.

Oh- and the Etteilla deck (which I love)- to me it reads like a hybrid tarot-Lenormand deck.

Basically, any tarot deck which I fail to understand must be an Oracle...

(I wonder if others have the same criteria?)

And of course any deck LeFanu can't understand is automatically listed as an oracle for me! :D
