Material for making Runes?

i'm planning to make runes myself..!
but...what material should be use?
can i use only cardboard to make them, instead of rocks?
or any other better suggestion?

Cardboard probably won't last very long. More popular choices are clay, wood, stone, semiprecious stones.

i personally favour natural materials. bone and antler are other alternatives, to stones and wood. one simple method mentioned in the following, excellent thread, is painting on river stones.
