WalMart White Box Thoth?!

Barefoot Fool

Okay, I've read many, many threads and visited many sites stating all the variations of Thoth throughout the ages. I think I understand a little bit more than I used to, but I'm sure I'll understand even more when I actually hold a deck in my hands (it's coming; nothing special).

What I don't understand is: I thought the white boxes were something that nobody made anymore. But WalMart has this deck
http://www.walmart.com/ip/215471
which has a picture of a white box, and this deck
http://www.walmart.com/ip/238651
which has a picture of a common purple box.

I don't see a new white box advertised anywhere else, & Walmart isn't known for HTF tarot decks. Am I missing something? I feel so ignorant. Has anyone here purchased this deck?

I don't know what's going on, but I ordered the white box version just to get the box. I hope the picture is not a mistake.

I'm tempted to order one too, since these might be the "greenies" - like my first Thoth, in 1980. The date is given as 1972 though, and the booklet has Kaplan instead of Wasserman. I'm suspicious.

Sometimes unopened boxes of things are found in warehouses, and put on the shelf for a normal price. The people who found it are under no obligation to see if their stock is rare, and probably have no idea that it is, if it is.

I would like to order a deck, but they don't deliver to France. Would anyone be interested in ordering one for me and sending it through? I can paypal you. Or I can get it sent to you and you can post it on to me?

Or perhaps they do deliver to Europe and I have overlooked it? If so, can someone pls point me to where I can find this info.

I'm in France too. Wallmart doesn't deliver to France? How... provincial, for one of the largest companies in the world.

The ISBN of the white box matches this one for the 1977 edition given by Thoth-mistress Lillie on the "list of editions" thread -

- so I'm sure it must be the right one.

Somehow we foreigners have to get them sent here.

This does make sense to me...on the news the other day they were talking about Walmart wanting to go head to head with Amazon. I did a search for tarot on the website and they sell a lot of tarot stuff now so I think I will try to order and see what happens. They have LoS bags and reading cloths in there too and some decks that are quite a bit cheaper on their site than I remember Amazon being.

Nope, you're right. They don't deal with non-US customers from that website.

"The Walmart.com website only ships orders to addresses within the 50 states, APO / FPO military addresses, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Promotional shipping offers, including 97-Cent Shipping, do not apply to deliveries outside the 48 contiguous United States.

"We do not ship to Canada or other destinations outside the U.S., except as noted above."

They give a list of non-US websites you can deal with - for instance in the UK, but they don't have the same selection.

So, we in Europe will have to find another way.

My theory is that they are really USGames Green Boxed Thoths (new ones). If you search that ISBN number, that is what comes up. When was the last time you saw a White Box with an ISBN 13 number?

That is probably correct...especially since I just ordered. It is the holiday season though, so they will be gifts if not the older ones.

good way to think, it's a good price and will make a very nice gift.

I have seen many listings for decks where they used the wrong picture. We have to consider that sellers, or the person making up the listing, may know next to nothing about tarot - they need a photo, look online, and figure if the box says Thoth, then it must be the right deck. This is likely a newer deck in the green box.
