In the past, I have given many if these poss a glance or two, but I never read the whole thread. However, I remembered seeing a post by Kissa about her pimped Merryday, so I had to find it. I did, here. I have this deck coming via a trade. I've always been drawn to the artwork--the colors, the whimsical drawings that tell an infinite number if stories and the fantasy elements. But, I hate the keywords (always dislike them) and the numerology references--both in ugly white blocks on the gorgeous black background that otherwise seemingly frames the image on the card.
Backing up: saw deck in trade thread, immediately thought, "This is an opportunity to pimp my deck!" Then, I thought, where did I see an image of one? See this thread . Kissa, your Merryday looks great!
I am going away next week until mid-September, but pimping the Merryday will be my project when I return. I plan on either:
- Trimming the bottom like you did so that the silly keyword and number box are done with it, and using a silver pen to add the traditional title names to the Court cards and Aces
- Trimming the keyword box, the number and then painting over the title in black, so that I can re-add all of the titles in my handwriting. I think it will add another nice whimsical element to the cards.
I also plan on using glitter when it feels right. I know the backs are horrible, and I've read awful things about the cardstock, so I want to make this deck as inviting as possible. Yes, I'll post photos, but that won't be until October I gather.
Have any of you ever painted over the titles in the cards? I won't be able to trim them off in this deck since the Minors and Majors have Roman numerals at the top. But, I imagine if I paint over the titles and then write my won with a silver pen, my idea can come to fruition.
Feedback please .
Omigosh, that MerryDay is tragic! How could they think adding FOUR white boxes on a card could work? Trim them off! (at least the keywords and numerology correspondences).
As for painting over them, and then adding your own titles, definitely try it on a title card (if there are any) first. I have a feeling the varnish on your typical tarot deck will prevent you from getting a solid, even black over the white. More likely it will look grey and streaked. More like a wash.
Oh, and I second what AJ said about the effects not showing up in the photographs. My cards just blaze in the sun, but when I try to capture that in a picture, it just looks like photos of unpimped cards.
