Dare to be different? Who else doesn't like the Victorian Romantic...

Carla

This might get moved to the Decks Forum, but. I'm wondering. I've been after the Victorian Romantic since the year dot it seems. I have missed the Russian, I missed a couple of pre-orders. But the last two pre-orders I missed, I had it in my cart, then cancelled. I just did that again. So I thought, what's going on here? I looked at the images online.

You know what? I don't even like it. I did the same thing with the Bohemian Gothic, bought the thing, tried SO HARD to like it, didn't like it, traded it.

I just want the VR because everyone wants it. I want it because I'm supposed to want it.

Is the lure of the Victorian Romantic lost on anyone else?

Yep :).

I bought the Boho FOUR times. Once I sold it, and three times I just gave it away. Then I sold the Cats one, and put the Fantastic Menagerie on a trade train because I had literally never even considered reading with it. I never wanted the Victorian Romantic. It just doesn't appeal, or tickle my reading buds at all.

Likewise Alice.

I really admire what MRP do. They have tremendous skill and the care and attention is second to none. Their work is absolutely wonderful. But it isn't for me I'm afraid.

Come on Carla, you know there is no such deck as 'everyone' wants it.

The thing with the MRP threads is they were flogged which made the mass mob appeal nearly irresistible.

We could say the same thing about many other high profile decks...

I've sold or given all but one of the MRP decks I think. Except for the boho gothic (made me laugh outloud) I liked them all for awhile, but then over time just grew out of them. As I have with decks from many other publishers.

In and of itself, the VR doesn't move me like it does others. But I can read perfectly fine with it. And I think it would make a nice light contrast to the dark of the BoGo in a huge double deck. (That's an experiment I have threatened to try many times, but it's always a case of too many ideas and not enough time.) I managed to snag a preorder bundle with book, more for the sake of the collection (and MRP subcollection) than because I absolutely have to have it. So I wouldn't say I dislike the deck. More that I'm indifferent to it....

I think a lot of cards, more than not, are pretty cool. I especially love the Tower - and would even buy it just for that card.

Hey, I'm not bashing MRP. Just doing some introspection. I've own a few MRP decks now (BG, Fantastic Menagerie, Vict Flower Oracle)--I don't enjoy reading with any of them. I don't particularly enjoy looking at them. Just a bit of self-discovery. I've dithered over the MRP decks for the last time. They're not for me.

Maybe it's more about being sucked in by whatever the current hyped deck is?

PathWalker

I think that's it. I'm quite a follower, in spite of myself.

Well at least if you know that, you can then start to make different choices if you want to :)

The thing is, there is absolutely no deck that every last person likes. Every deck has its detractors and most have admirers. Deviant Moon for example, I find that deck unreadable but I cannot help but bow to its many admirers who say, quite honestly I am sure, that it is the best reading deck ever.

Loads of people like the VR, so I am unsurprised that there are readers who don't bond with it at all.
