Kind of a Weird Request- Toddler Friendly Decks?

vee

So my (almost) 2 year old of course wants to mimic everything I do. He's always trying to grab at my Tarot decks and play with them, but he's not very gentle. I thought it would be nice to get him his own little deck so that he can play with them and leave mine alone! I mean, I don't keep them where he can reach them, but he is always asking for them. So I'm looking for something with heavy card stock--the Shakespeare Oracle is the deck I have that I let him play with occasionally--and cute simple images on it. Any ideas?

I got this totally bootleg Hello Kitty deck from etsy that was laminated with plastic and I gave it to my 2 year old daughter. She loved it! Lost all the cards eventually... but it was fun while it lasted.

Perhaps you could get something laminated from Office Max or something?

The other thing I've done with my kids is give them playing cards. I found some "Jumbo" playing cards at the Dollar Store and gave them those. At 2, they don't know it's not a tarot. It's just cards.

I think my 4 year old might be ready to begin with tarot, but I'm going to hold out a little longer giving him a real deck to take care of. We're still working on him getting all the Candy Land pieces back in the box each time... :bugeyed:

As already suggested, a cheap pack of playing cards would suffice I'm sure.

eta am I being judgemental by saying that I think 2 years or even 4 years old is way too young to learn Tarot cards or is it the done thing now and I haven't heard?

I've always used and suggested various trading card games as "first decks."
I watch bargains & close outs for card games that feature various famous characters like Hello Kitty, Super Hero Squad, etc.

I have several sets of waterproof playing cards and they hold up. I like the case they come in.

I like the look of these too - they are plastic and glow in the dark.

These aren't plastic but they feature cute dogs on them. And they are cheap.

You could even get a set of flash cards meant for smaller kids and give those to him. He's not going to notice the difference but he'll have a deck of cards he can do whatever he wants to with. He'll probably enjoy them a lot more, in fact, than he would a deck of anything else.

That's a really good idea because he can learn as well as play. (I realised that I'd make one of those perfectionist type mums as I was thinking of French flash cards so he can learn two languages:p )

I don't have children so have no idea if a two year old can talk...? Anyway there are flash cards for learning animals, the alphabet and all sorts of useful things:

But what are tarot cards if not flash cards for adults?

This is not tarot, but I played Good Witch, Bad Witch with my twin girls for many years. We would spell their name, and they just loved looking at the cards. They would ask for the witch game. he he it truly is a harmless little deck.
