Good deck to start with?

((I'm not sure if this post belongs here, or in the deck forum, I'm sorry if it is in the wrong place))

A friend of mine wants to start using tarot, and she wants me to give advice on which deck to choose. I know Rider-Waite, Robin Wood, etc. are some of the "easier" decks to start with, but she wants something more modern (as in more modern pictures) Does anyone have an idea on what kind of deck might be right for her?
I know a deck is something personal, but I'd like some suggestions, just to help her search in the right direction.

if you can try going to a store that has decks open so you can see, because it might help her select one

How about the Gilded? It is a beautiful modern deck with vibrant artwork and illustrated pips. Which I think is important for a beginner (personal preference of course)

What are her interests? What kind of artwork does she like? Could start there & there are so many to check out right here at the top of the page!

I personally think the Hanson-Roberts is super easy to read with, if she likes that style. The pictures flow together really well (for me at least) to read them by just looking at those. I would also recommend the Gilded, because it's similar to Rider-Waite but a little 'up-to-date' with Ciro's style and colors and whatnot.

I agree with those opting for Ciro's decks. The Gilded is excellent for beginners and very modern in style, same with the Legacy of the Divine. These are the first ones that spring to mind if asked to find a deck that is both modern and highly readable, even for beginners. She might want to pass on the Tarot of Dreams for now though. The deck's references to astrology and the Kabbalah might be a bit much, so unless she's very familiar with these it's probably not the best way to start out(this was my first reading deck, so I should know).

A lot of Lo Scarabeo decks work well for beginners. The Universal Goddess Tarot has always been one of my most favored decks and it's very accurate, but I'm not sure I'd characterize it as "modern" and it's probably best suited for those interested in ancient Goddess culture.

Tarot of the Sweet Twilight is a pretty modern deck. It's different from decks following the style of Robin Wood, Hanson-Roberts and so on, but personally I found it very easy to read with and one that really causes my intuition and imagination to stir. The colors are bright and strong and the artwork is probably not to everyone's taste.

Otherwise it would probably be a good idea for her to have a look around, see what decks she feels attracted to.

The LoS Pagan Tarot and the Bright Idea Deck both have a modern setting (skyscrapers, cars, computers, etc.). You can see samples here:

ETA - Almost forgot the Vanessa Tarot. Very spunky and female oriented. It also comes in a cool tin box. Samples here:

Direct your friend to the following sites:

Albideuter - http://www.albideuter.de/
Taroteca - http://taroteca.multiply.com/

Mind you - not all the decks on these sites are in print, however your friend will have a BOUNTIFUL harvest of decks to choose from. Even if s/he picks an out of print deck, I'm sure there are similar options.

Good luck.
