Tarot of Marseilles help desk (Frequently Asked Questions): Non-History

Diana

lunakasha: Those new deck spreads don't make sense to me at all. But if you do another easy spread - a Past / Present / Future one, for instance - relating to your Tarot journey, I will be happy to give you my take on it as well. I don't have the Fournier (and probably never will) but a Marseilles is a ..... well, a Marseilles, and they all get on pretty well together.

I am hoping that TarotGarden will soon have them in stock. I will write to Kris Hadar again and see the status of this, because I brought up this problem with him and he is trying to solve the problem for us all. :)

THANKS Diana!!!

That is wonderful news...I know I would appreciate being able to order some Marseille decks here in the US....

Quick question to anyone who has the Fournier deck:

I was just looking through the cards and noticed the Two of Cups (Coupes) has some writing at the bottom of the card, almost like an "extra card", except it is the only Two of Cups in the deck!!!!

It says: Maritxu de Guler, specialiste du Tarot, A. Aymerich, creation artistique

Does this seem strange to anyone???
Do all the Fournier Two of Cups have this on them???

:) Thanks, Luna

Hi lunakesha,

Yes, all the Fournier 2 of Cups have this notation. I think it is simply an attribution to someone like the printer or the publisher. Although the company is Fournier, maybe there were others involved in the production. Maritxu may well be the company who looked after the printing and the person below him was definitely the artist by the looks of it.

I'll try to find out. Rusty Neon or Lee wll possibly know.

Just be yourself in the reading and say what you think, whichever spread you do. There are no rights or wrongs here. I have seen some of the loveliest and most accurate perceptions come from people who "didn't know" and simply gave from their impressions and hearts.

Many bright blessings,

Moongold

All the Two of Deniers in Marseilles decks have written on them the name of the master card-maker (maître-cartier), and also a date on them. Most often the date when the deck was first published.

I tried to scan a picture to show you how it's done in other Marseille decks, (the Fournier way of doing it sounds very odd) but my scanner is not scanning properly. I think the Coke that was spilt on it the other day didn't do it much good. :D

LOL....I have noticed lately that pounding on the keyboard and/or kicking the monitor doesn't help either.....but sometimes you just have to do it....:p

In terms of modern restorations of the Marseilles, I prefer the Jodorowsky-Camoin over the Hadar. But that's just my humble opinion.

Luna ..... You can obtain the Hadar deck through amazon.ca (Amazon Canada). :) Note that prices there are posted in Canadian dollars rather than U.S. dollars.

With reference to the Two Cups inscription, it is also a common feature of many Marseille-style decks.

In addition to the more common and universal publishing attributions on the band lemniscating the Two Coins, the front of the Chariot often (but not always) has the initials of the artist, and the Two Cups may also have some writing regarding its authenticity, quality, or other markings on a lower 'panel'. Even some Marseille decks which have done away with the writing at times retain the wide panel on this card.

...and great to have you enjoying the Marseille - in whatever preferred form you may incline :)

That's great news Diana! Thanks so much for looking into it. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it will soon be available at Tarot Garden.
