Grizabella
My literal beginning, I guess, was probably in the late 90's when a friend of mine sent me Jamie Sams Medicine cards, because that was the lead-in for Tarot for me. Before that, I was scared to death of Tarot from the way I was raised to believe it was evil. I didn't associate the Jamie Sams cards with Tarot at that time, but that's what eventually led me to think of Tarot and decide to try it.
When I decided to try Tarot, the first deck I got was the Medicine Woman deck but what I was really looking for was the Ancestral Path except that I couldn't find it at first and the Medicine Woman cards were kind of close. Even though it was called Tarot, I thought it was safe because it was somewhat Native American. Couldn't read with that one, and the book was even more confusing. I did eventually find the Ancestral Path but couldn't read with that either. Got the Gonzalez Native American deck somewhere along the line and that art work is even worse than RWS but it was small enough to shuffle easily, at least. (It's one of my favorites now, though.)
I honestly don't remember what order I got other decks in after the Sams deck. My reason for choosing decks was really dumb, first of all. I picked the Buckland because I had married a gypsy once. (Brilliant reasoning, I know.) I had picked the Ancestral Path and Medicine Woman because I'm of Native American descent. (Shows how much I knew about Tarot.) And then I got the Haindl because I'm also of German descent. (Sigh---I know, I know. That brilliant reasoning again.) I avoided Rider Waite like the plague because I thought it was so ugly. Eventually I broke down and did get a RWS and that's when I really started to learn Tarot. I'm still not fond of the RWS art work and never will be a RWS addict, but I can read with it. I had to start with Universal Waite, though.
