I generally drink at home one or two glasses of brut wine (sugar is BAD for empaths) but NEVER NEVER NEVER to drown things out, no matter how badly I want it. I do not drink around people or big parties either and here is the reasons why:
Empath's function is to observe humans; feel their pain, sorrows, desires through empathy. That means your desire to show compassion for an individual or in this case a group of people is strong enough to convert your own body chemistry to produce similar emotions within you.
Since you were never tought how to deal with this: What you are experiencing is involuntary empathy. For example, if you are binge drinking at a party, take a look around and see who wishes for you to drink? Is this a friend who wants to you to help them feel less guilty? Ask the question, why? Why is the person next to you drinking? Ask the question how they feel or rather what are THEY trying to drown out? Since most people drink to relax and relax means drown out the anxiety, meaning YOU will feel compassion for their pain. So empathicly you will convert you body chemistry: "absorb their emotional crap and the NEED TO DRINK". Not the mucho fun drunk feelings but the rotten negative twisted personal issues that you have experienced at some point in your life and most sertainly want to drown out. Empathy does not work on happy feeling people. It only converts your body chemistry when the feelings people next to you having are: BAD, UNGLY, NEGATIVE, DIPRESSIVE, HORRIBLE, etc

Think of it this way. You have a dam that is between a lake and river. This river goes through the valley. When the banks of the lake swell up, they push on the dam. To much and it breaks the dam.... this is what Alcohol does.. it does not just poke more holes... it inihilates your dam/boundary. There is the perfect relieve from the pressure. However, down the valley, everything is destroyed and when the water subsides, you get GARBAGE. That's what you left with in the morning after binge drinking as empath. Other peoples GARBAGE.
