Justice - "testicles and erect phallus"?

Lula Jing

Apologies if this has been discussed at length already (no pun intended!) but...

I was casually flipping through a great book called Tarot Plain and Simple by Anthony Louis when I noticed this possible interpretation for Justice. This surprised me... (at first) but then looking at the Robin Wood card... well yeah. Those scales and that sword DO kind of look that way.

The thing that puzzles me about this interpretation is that I'd always viewed this card as being non-sexual, cool and highly rational. Lawyers, contracts, agreements... etc.

So what surrounding cards in a spread would lead you to focus on those scales and that sword in such a way? Any examples?

IS it a sexual card - or does it represent fertility as a theme?

Just wondering like! :)

hello priestess,

hm, o.k., if one would say that the justice-card got a phallus-symbol made of the sword she/it is carrying, then all sword-cards (or lots of them) could be seen as a phallus?? I don`t think that way, it makes less sense to me.

(maybe the batons could be seen as phallus-symbols, but even there i don`t see it in that direct way-don`t like it..its a mens world??)

Nor i find her very fertile, but kind of mysterious, kind of "karma" ..what comes around, that goes around..there is not very much fertility to be found.Or the fertility is hidden, is part of the higher lerning, but not in this card directly.

But i found your question interesting, and there is one emotional thing why i answered; i got a tatoo, its an angel with his sword..maybe Michael?? and those people who are thinking the sword (what is showing down!) to be a phallus..oh i don`t know-i don`t like those people..this kind of thinking seems kind of frustrated in the background;-)

Hi mel_rose,

I don't think this applies to all swords. It's more the combination of scales (lower down) and upright sword (not angled) that makes one put two-and-two together to come up with "erect phallus".

A more potent and fertile card might be ace wands upright with phallic connotations.

I wouldn't worry about your tattoo... ;)

You mean you can "read too much" into the cards if you are sexually frustrated? Possibly. But I got this idea from a book, not a reading, so not guilty your honour. ;)

The only way I see the erect phallus working for Justice is in the "on or off" nature of an erection.

Either the mojo is there or it is not. Only a straight, firm penis will enter the temple.

Er - OK.....

In the absence of any other sexual connotation, sexually-motivated question, surrounding cards, Justice as represented by an erect phallus and testicles could refer to that card's energy: direct, active, observable, conscious, clear, unambiguous.

One could say that the counterpart would be a woman's sexual organs: indirect, passive, non-observable, unconscious, ambiguous.

Improbably and as a woman, I take issue with "passive sexual organs". Not to mention "unconscious". Seriously.

I'm a woman, too. I also made sure to preface that statement with a "could".

I was distinguishing polarities and referring to elemental dignity (active/passive) and psychological (conscious/unconscious) parlance, not suggesting anything "positive" or "negative". But I could see someone perceiving it as such. I meant no disrespect in offering a perspective.
