Rather than a failing of belief in oneself, the belief in a guide or Spirit who is able to bring information we could not normally know says something about the individual's culture. Just about every nation on the earth has honoured their Ancestors and Spirits either at some time in the past or to the present day. This is usually borne out with proof as Mingbop outlined in the original post. Who the Spirit or Ancestor was, is sometimes less important than the healing or information that they can bring to the community or individual. Even as an extension of an individual's personality it is a distinction of genuine humility, not weakness that leads us to believe in and recognise something greater than ourselves.
