I've said this before in another thread, but, it is really about fear. I think that the tester wants the really knock your socks off reading, but they are so afraid to think that they in their uniqueness could be readable.
The other thing to consider...
I read for Gardener's tester after she did and one thing I noticed about her, and forgive me for being a bit unkind, she was rather devoid of personality. She actually didn't know any better...she was just a flat, stale person.
Even when I think the cards aren't hitting, I know they are.
And I think this holds true even when we get flustered or know the person, or get sidetracked etc.
Except for when, as Umbrae says, you start reading for yourself.
